Today, I had the privilege of meeting Iddy John, CEO of Safari Wallet, on a rare Saturday that coincided with my precious time with my kids. As a proud recovering addict, father, and mental health advocate rebuilding my life, I was torn between postponing the meeting or bringing my children along. I chose the latter, trusting John’s values from our few interactions since meeting two months ago.

Not only did he offer me valuable mentorship on my mental health platform, Mwangaza Wa Sunday, but he also welcomed my children with warmth and treated them to lunch. It was a gesture that went beyond professionalism, showing real humanity. As we drove away, my kids waved, shouting, “Thank you, Uncle Iddy!”—a heartwarming reminder that there are mentors who truly understand the challenges of balancing recovery, parenting, and entrepreneurship.

Today, I didn’t experience judgment or bias. Instead, John focused on my ideas, character, and determination. To fellow recovering addicts, mental health champions, aspiring entertainers and single parents, the road to recovery, redemption, professional success and parenting is tough, but there are kind, supportive people in our environs who help us rebuild our lives, pursue our dreams, and stay committed to being the best for our children, communities and ultimately ourselves.

Thank you, John, and the team at Safari Wallet, for your mentorship, hospitality, and for showing what true leadership looks like.
