Don’t Just Stop; Spread the Message – Step 12

“Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.” — Step 12, Alcoholics Anonymous
Step 12: Service to Others
Step 12 is the heart of recovery: service. After walking through the fire, we don’t just walk away—we turn back and help the next person through. For me, this has meant volunteering in rehab centers, speaking at events, guiding families, and showing up for those who still struggle. It keeps me grounded. It keeps me sober.
The Big Book reminds us: “Practical experience shows that nothing will so much ensure immunity from drinking as intensive work with other alcoholics.” In helping others, we stay free.
Over the last three years, I’ve witnessed hope return to people’s lives—and I’ve seen the pain of those still trying to find their way.
That’s why this is a call to action: whether you’ve been through rehab or not, if recovery has touched your life, share that gift. Be present. Be useful. Carry the message.
We recover together. We stay free together. Let’s keep doing the work.
