Sunday's Story

Mwangaza wa Sunday is a resource for those facing addiction and mental health struggles.

Our mission is to inspire, educate, and support by connecting people with the resources they need to recover and build a better future. We aim to change the way addiction and mental health are addressed by breaking the stigma and fostering open conversations.

“Mwangaza” means light or enlightenment in Swahili, symbolizing our commitment to guiding others towards resilience and holistic well-being. Let's illuminate the path to recovery and become beacons of hope together.

My Story

Sunday's Journey

The Spiral Begins

My journey began in 2020, when aged 38, the death of my father triggered a two year long depression I didn’t know I was suffering from. Anxiety and insomnia also came along with that hidden depression, both of which I didn’t recognize at the time. I went through days without sleep. I isolated myself, created family conflict, and felt crushed under the silent weight of grief.

Addiction soon followed — cocaine, alcohol, and food became my escape.

Transformation through Rehab

In 2022, through family intervention, I entered rehab. There, I learned I was living with ADHD, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and grief. For the first time in a long time, I cried in grief counselling. I discovered my empathy, my personality, my brokenness, and my hope. The Alcoholic’s Anonymous 12-step program and the Journey to Freedom spiritual counselling program both introduced me to honesty, amends, and forgiveness, and reintroduced me to God.

Persistence in Recovery

Recovery was not a straight line. I had a lapse. I had a relapse. But each time, I rose stronger. I discovered that relapse is not failure — it is part of recovery. My faith deepened, my clarity grew, and my purpose became clear: to break stigma, share lived experiences, and help others heal.

Landing on My Feet

Today, I am studying Addiction Treatment Sciences, working with rehab facilities in Kenya and Tanzania, and helping people in recovery and their families to rebuild their lives. I have created platforms like USU (Unconventional Stories Unmasked) where people can speak openly and find support.

This website is my way of living out my IKIGAI, my purpose: to turn pain into service, to show that healing is possible, and to invite you to walk with me in building an open, empathetic society where no one struggles in silence.
